Motorists now have Haven from trains

ONE YEAR, $28 million and innumerable headaches for motorists later, the newly constructed Haven Avenue underpass in Rancho Cucamonga opened Wednesday.

Dignitaries gathered for a ceremony on the pavement before the street was opened to traffic. and where dignitaries gather, yours truly is sure to go.

Noting that the underpass was completed ahead of schedule, Mayor Don Kurth declared cheerfully: "Santa came early for Haven Avenue commuters."

(Who writes his material, Paul Leon?)

The new bridge is, in all seriousness, a fine piece of work and - with its fluted columns, burnt-orange paint, grape-cluster relief and arches over the traffic lanes - it's almost certainly the most aesthetically pleasing underpass in the Inland Valley, for anyone who follows that sort of thing.

Some 38,000 cars a day use Haven's six lanes of traffic. with the underpass, cars will no longer idle to wait for trains to pass 40 times per day, enough to cut 14,000 tons of emissions per year, Kurth said.

Creating an underpass was quite an undertaking. The roadbed was lowered by 28 feet, which City Engineer Mark Steuer said required excavating 150,000 cubic yards of dirt, "the equivalent of 10,000 dump trucks."

Huh. how much pollution was emitted by 10,000 dump trucks?

(Not to mention by Wednesday's half-hour of speeches.)

Construction also necessitated a detour road that looped through vacant land to the west. this displaced the

log that for years had borne an uncanny resemblance to the Loch Ness monster. perhaps I'm bitter, but Nessie's loss was a high price to pay for convenience.

After the ceremony, Councilman Sam Spagnolo tried to picture how the bridge and its arches, with the mountains rising in the distance, will look to northbound motorists as their cars dip for the below-grade passage.

"Often we don't appreciate the beauty of the area. We're too busy thinking about the traffic and the train and whether we're going to catch it or not catch it. Now we'll be able to absorb the view," Spagnolo said.

I always knew he had the soul of a poet.

Some remembered when the valley was so unpopulated, Haven was one lane in each direction. Now both sides are lined with office buildings, many completed or in the latter stages when the economy collapsed.

There was some quiet joking as to how long it would be until the bridge saw its first graffiti.

Asked that question, Councilwoman Diane Williams jokingly held up her wrist to see what time it was. but city employees will be vigilant, she said.

"The graffiti truck is going to come by every morning," Williams said.

Uh-oh. more emissions.

IN ONTARIO, you may remember our recent front-page feature about hairdresser Mona Vasquez, the last remaining tenant of the Granada Theater's storefronts.

Vasquez was married Dec. 5 - to Councilman Jim Bowman.

"We traveled to Italy for the wedding," Bowman told me. "We were married on a gondola in Venice outside St. Peter's Square."

"Actually," Bowman clarified, "it was at the Venetian in Las Vegas."

But the couple was indeed married on a gondola, a minister in the boat with them, floating on a manmade waterway near a replica of St. Peter's Square, as strangers on the shore applauded.

Bowman, by the way, lately has been sporting a goatee and darkened hair, a reflection either of a new phase in his life or a close acquaintance with a hairdresser, or both.

Of Vasquez, Bowman said, beaming: "She's just an absolute sweetheart."

Sounds like she has his vote of approval.
